Disney short of visitors

Disneyland Hong Kong failed to meet its goal of 5.6 million visitors in its opening year. Summer months were the best with 20.000 – 30.000 visitors a day. In recent weeks 50% of the guests were from mainland China.

Bill Ernest, the park’s managing director told the press that the park would meet its target later in September or in early October. The park opened on september the 12th 2005. The strategy was to lure the chinese who can afford a trip to Hong Kong.

The park and its two resorts is surround by mountains, 30 minutes away by subway from central Hong Kong. It’s a joint venture between the Walt Disney co. and the local goverment. Construction cost 3,5 billion dollar.

Ernest claims Chinese visitors want more flexibility and choices when it comes to buying tickets and events. The park plans to launch promotions for Halloween, Christmas and Chinese New Year.

“Many visitors don’t understand the park themes because they didn’t grow up with Disney. Disneyland is preparing a pre-show that visitors could watch before entering the park. The show (10-15 min.) would explain how the stories fit to the characters.”
